Lyriothemis keralensis is a newly identified species of dragonfly that has recently been reported in the news. Scientists discovered it in the low-lying coastal areas of Kerala and confirmed it as a distinct species after careful study and comparison with a closely related Northeast Indian species, Lyriothemis acigastra.
Often referred to as the “Slender Bombardier,” this dragonfly belongs to the genus Lyriothemis. It is characterized by a slim abdomen, a uniquely shaped tail end, and distinctive reproductive structures that helped researchers differentiate it from similar species.
The dragonfly is mostly seen during the monsoon months, when environmental conditions are suitable for its activity. Its presence declines as rainfall reduces, indicating a strong link between its life cycle and seasonal weather patterns.
