Scientists have raised concerns that the Thwaites Glacier in West Antarctica is melting at an accelerating rate due to human-driven climate change. Often nicknamed the “Doomsday Glacier,” it is one of the largest and fastest-moving glaciers in the region, covering an area comparable to Florida or Great Britain.
This glacier plays a major role in global sea levels, already accounting for roughly 4% of the yearly rise. Research indicates that it is gradually thinning, pulling back from its original position, and releasing increasing amounts of meltwater into the oceans. If the glacier were to break down completely, it could weaken the stability of the wider West Antarctic Ice Sheet and lead to a significant increase in sea levels worldwide.
